Ground zero. Some reconstruction has begun already. The new metal frames are for the PATH train station which is being rebuilt without waiting for the final plans for the site. There is a tube tunnel ending in thin air just to the right of the new frame.

The Sambadrome, built 1984 for the purpose. The schools parade from right to left. The judges sit in the box located under the tent cover.
The first float from the first school, 9:00pm. The seven schools on Segunda (Monday) night were Porto da Pedra, Mangueira (eventual winners), Imperio Serrano, Mocidade, Imperatriz, Viradouro and Portela. Each school parades to it's own very loud Samba music for about one hour.

Tabacon hot springs resort. Imagine a swedish massage followed by 20 mins in hot springs then sitting at this bar (a bit like the one at Grotto Bay) drinking a cool beer and watching the fiery red lava erupt from volcano Arenal, while the warm, humid night air is filled with the cries and insistent noise of a thousand exotic animals. It was good.
